Keep Fit ... Bowl a Bit!

Bowling is a lifetime sport and it's benefits last a lifetime!

The Game:

The object of the game of five pin bowling is to score as many points as possible by knocking down the five pins. A perfect game consists of 12 consecutive strikes for a score of 450 ... a lifetime challenge for many bowlers.

Each game consists of 10 frames with the pins being reset for each frame. The bowler throws up to three balls in each frame and tries to knock down all remaining pins with each ball.

A strike occurs if all five pins are knocked down with the first ball of frames 1 to 9, or any of the three balls in frame 10. A spare occurs if all pins are knocked down with the first two balls of a frame. The impact of strikes and spares is explained in the scoring section.

In frames 1 to 9, no further balls are thrown once all the pins are down. In frame 10, however, the bowler throws three balls, even if each one results in a strike. Thus it is possible to throw 12 strikes in a game.

Each lane has a foul line marked to terminate the throwing area. A foul occurs when any part of the bowler's body or wearing apparel crosses over the foul line during the delivery of the ball. Each foul results in 15 points being deducted from your score.

Your score can never go below zero.

Scoring:

Each pin has an assigned point value. The head pin (center) is worth 5 points if you knock it down. The two adjacent pins, (either side of the head pin) are worth 3 points if knocked down. And, the two back pins are worth 2 points each if knocked down.

Leaning pins are considered to be down. (please use the pin reset to clear them out)

It is therefore possible to score 15 points in a frame if all 5 pins are knocked down with 3 balls.

Scoring a strike in a frame allows the bowler to add the points from the first two balls in the following frame to the strike frame's score. For example, if a strike is scored in frame 6 it would score 15 points plus the total points from the first two balls in frame 7.

Scoring a spare in a frame allows the bowler to add the points from the first ball in the following frame to the spare frame's score. For example, if a spare is bowled in frame 4, it would score 15 points plus the points from the first ball bowled in frame 5.

History:

Bowling dates back to approximately 5000 BC. The modern 5-pin game was originated in Canada in 1910 by Tommy Ryan, a sportsman and art dealer. Five Pin Bowling has increased in popularity over the years too become a favorite pastime for the whole family. It appeals to all ages and walks of life.
